Original Watercolor by George Ernest Colby

This is an original watercolor on paper adhered to board by American painter George Ernest Colby (1859-1922). Click on image to enlarge. I framed it myself with conservation materials and UV-blocking glazing. The image area measures 7.5” x 13.5” and the overall frame size is 15.5” x 21.5.”

George Ernest Colby was born on March 29, 1859 in Pleasant Grove, Olmsted County, Minnesota. He died on April 3, 1922. Colby painted from 1898-1913, and among his subjects are the Rocky Mountains. Luna Nueva - Signed lithographic print #100/150

I’ve just acquired two, framed lithographic prints by Columbian artist Guillermo Silva.

If you’re not familiar with Silva’s work, you can read about this international artist here. Guillermo Silva passed on June 27, 2007.

These are lithographic prints and are professionally mounted, matted and framed. “Luna Llena” is print #2/150 and “Luna Nueva” is print #100/150. Both prints are signed by the artist.

The images of the prints are obscurred by reflections of the camera tripod and ambient light in the room.  These prints have to be seen in person to appreciate the detail and bright colors of the work.

Luna Llena - Signed lithographic print #2/150

I have just acquired two Dean Warnholtz signed, limited edition lithographic prints: “Knight” (detail pictured), 1966 (#7 in an edition of 16 total) and “Verbena,” a more recent lithograph from 1978, #6 in an edition of 10 total prints. Check out the Gallery section to see the entire print. The prints came to me framed. I’ve opened the frame packages and remounted one of the prints (the other was fine) with conservation mounting board and added conservation glazing to both frame packages. The frame sizes are approximately 34″ x 24″ (Knight) and 34″ x 27″ (Verbena.) The photos I took today have a lot of background reflection in them, so come into Grezzo Gallery to see these beautiful prints in person.

Dean Warnholtz was born in Sioux City, Iowa and earned his B.A. and M.F.A. degrees at the State University of Iowa. He came to Carleton College in Northfield, MN in 1949 and was a popular member of the faculty for 33 years. An accomplished artist in several mediums, Warnholtz won numerous prizes and purchase awards for his paintings. He participated in many one-man and group exhibitions at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Sioux City Art Center, the Schlier Gallery in Denver, the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and at Carleton and other institutions in the Midwest. On sabbatical leave from Carleton during the 1955-56 academic year, Warnholtz spent several months in Mexico, where he studied lithography at the San Miguel de Allende Instituto, and in Sioux City, where he was commissioned to paint a mural for the Third Presbyterian Church. He studied at the Hayter Atelier in Paris in 1975. He also studied traditional woodblock printing techniques in Japan and created a series of murals honoring the scientific contributions of Carleton’s President Emeritus Lawrence M. Gould.

Wendell Arneson has been on the faculty at St. Olaf College since 1978, specializing in painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), drawing, and color design. Additional information about Wendell Arneson’s work at St. Olaf can be found here.

Fred Somers’ framed original pastel “Near Emma’s and Gina’s” was produced in 1987. The image area measures 17 3/4″ x 13″ and has been professionally framed with conservation materials, including a double rag mat, conservation glazing and a solid maple frame which measures 25″ x 20″ in its outside dimensions. The pastel is titled, dated and signed by the artist along the bottom edge of the artwork. The following is from the artist’s website (fredericksomers.com): “Fred Somers is a painter in pastel and oil. Living in Minnesota and traveling throughout MidAmerica and back to his Scandinavian roots, Fred seeks out the uncommon beauty in the commonplace. During his 35-year career he has been honored as American Swedish Artist of the Year; he has designed the Minnesota State Parks Sticker; received a Ruth Richeson Grand Prize in Pastel’s 100 and has numerous paintings in public, private and corporate collections.”
